Ingersoll Rand Engineered Compressor Package Powers Major “Energy-From-Waste” Facility in the UK
When a Zurich-based leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor operating in the energy-from-waste and renewable gas markets, was starting work on the energy-from-waste facility located in UK, they turned to Ingersoll Rand’s Engineering Project Solutions (EPS) team to source a comprehensive compressed air system for the site. The customer was looking for a partner capable of not only providing the highest-quality compressed air technology, but also offering superior project management skills.
When this “energy-from-waste” is completed, the facility will produce electricity and heat by burning fuels derived from various types of waste coming from municipal, commercial and industrial sources.
Compressed Air Needs
The plant will be using substantial amounts of compressed air that will be crucial for ensuring its efficient and reliable operation. The facility’s compressed air system will support several different applications including instrument air and service air, as well as selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) air.
All of these distinct processes have their unique air flow and air quality requirements, which means that the scope of delivery had to be well thought-out and flexible to meet the highly demanding project specifications.
Generating the Right Solution
Drawing on its vast experience in designing, managing and implementing the most challenging engineered-to-order compressed air system projects for the world’s leading EPC contractors from the chemical, manufacturing, oil and gas, and power generation industries, among others, the Ingersoll Rand Engineering Project Solutions team managed to deliver a solution that fully addresses the customer’s needs. The solution encompasses a complete air compressor package along with project management services including project documentation preparation and local on-site support.
The proposed package includes both air compressors and all the necessary auxiliary system elements. It comprises two Fixed Lubricated Air Compressors and two Variable Lubricated Air Compressor units to meet the facility’s large compressed air demand, as well as two Heatless Desiccant Dryers to provide -40 °C dew point for plant’s instrument air line. Also provided within the package were exhaust ducts with automatic louvers for air recirculation during winter time and a fully redundant PLC control system for the entire scope, including automatic louvers of hot air ducting.
Key Benefits
Ingersoll Rand Engineered Air Compressor Packages are providing this EPC Contractors with a number of key advantages such as:
-
On time Delivery. The whole package was delivered on time despite demanding submittal dates for an exhaustive list of deliverables that included drawings and other project documents. The timely installation of the package will make it much easier for HZI to deliver the complex investment according to schedule.
-
Cost savings. We provide the most economical compressed air system configuration.
-
Customizability. We have once again demonstrated our ability to offer flexible and perfectly coordinated one-stop-shop services to the most demanding technical requirements.
-
Total Project Management Support. Our project management team of expert engineers has provided support during the whole process, from the design through to assembly to commissioning and start-up; including complete technical & quality documentation.
By successfully supporting this ambitious waste to energy project, which marked the first collaboration between Ingersoll Rand Engineering Project Solutions and this Zurich-based EPC Contractor, we have already become a reference supplier of compressed air solutions for this customer. This EPC contractor is now considering extending the scope of our cooperation to also include our nitrogen generation and biogas compressor packages.
