Why is 100% Oil-Free Compressed Air So Important For The Pharmaceutical Industry?
Compressed air plays an essential role in the pharmaceutical industry for a range of different manufacturing processes and applications. But why is air quality so important? The nature of the pharmaceutical industry demands high-quality air due to the life-saving products it manufacturers and processes. Therefore, 100% oil-free ISO 8573 Class 0 certified air is essential to ensure product quality and consumer safety. Class 0 air quality was established by ISO back in 2011, a decision that aimed to limit oil contamination in compressed air. The FDA stated that “each manufacturer shall establish and maintain procedures to prevent contamination of equipment or product by substances that could reasonably be expected to have an adverse effect on product quality”. This air quality has become commonplace in a large range of industries, including the pharmaceutical and medical sectors, to emphasise the need for oil-free air to ensure consumer safety.
Whilst consumer safety and product quality are of the utmost importance, there are other reasons why 100% oil-free air is important. One reason is to prevent equipment degradation from oil contamination. Pharmaceutical production lines are packed with different essential machines, and the presence of moisture or other contaminants in these machines can rapidly decrease their efficiency. Utilising oil-free air is an easy way to prevent production line downtime! Environmental concerns also come into play here, as oil-free air is a much cleaner, eco-friendly option for the atmosphere.
How Can You Ensure Your Compressed Air Meets Industry Quality Requirements?
In order to continuously produce Class 0 air, you need to have the correct equipment in place. At Ingersoll Rand, we offer comprehensive air audits which can gauge your current air quality. From here, we can suggest a long-term solution that continuously produces optimal-quality compressed air. This may involve the implementation of some of our expert ISO 8573-certified equipment, as shown below:
Is There A Way To Meet Stringent Pharmaceutical Air Quality Requirements & Cut Costs?
100% oil-free air doesn’t come without a cost, but we have developed a way to maximise our customers’ air quality using cost-efficient solutions! Recently, we have partnered with a medical industry leader who specialises in life-saving and sustaining pharmaceuticals for individuals who suffer from kidney disease, trauma, infectious diseases, immune disorders, haemophilia and other acute and chronic medical conditions. They were struggling with pressure and flow issues and with the presence of moisture in their system. As discussed above, this was leading to equipment degradation, which threatened the integrity and effectiveness of their processes. After assessing the situation, our Ingersoll Rand experts got to work and implemented some of our cost-effective oil-free solutions. Here’s what they thought:
“The compressor meets all our expectations because all the moisture issues in the production scrap line were resolved. The compressor life cycle has been increased, and no more downtimes or frequent maintenance services are required…all these improvements result in more significant energy savings and a profitable long-term investment.”
